Function description
Asynchronous motors are often started directly or using a star-delta circuit. During direct starting, extremely high inrush currents occur, up to seven times the rated motor current. The star-delta circuit mitigates the problem by providing a voltage that is one root of three lower in each phase. However, switching from star to delta also creates a significant current spike. These starting methods can overload the network, disturb other consumers, cause mechanical issues, and expose the entire drive to high wear and tear.
The solution to these problems is a soft starter. During startup, the starter reduces the voltage in two of the three phases through phase cutting. During the adjustable starting time, the torque gradually increases until the full line voltage is applied to the motor. This results in a network and drive-friendly, smooth ramp-up of your drive.
The PSE series soft starters are also the world's first compact soft starters with built-in electronic overload protection for the motor and integrated torque control for precise pump control. The combination of compact design and essential features provides an extremely powerful starting solution.
The illuminated, language-neutral display with the easy-to-use four-button keypad allows easy access to the soft starter's advanced functions. The display also shows all necessary information during startup and continuous operation.
Integrated Bypass
By using the bypass after reaching full voltage, power losses are significantly reduced, saving energy. In the PSE soft starter series, the bypass is integrated in all sizes, resulting in a very compact starter and eliminating the need for the wiring of a separate bypass relay during installation.
Torque Control
The most important function for stopping pumps is torque control. Since the PSE series soft starters are optimized for pump control, this function is, of course, indispensable.
Coated Circuit Boards
All circuit boards of the new PSE series soft starters are provided with a protective coating to ensure reliable operation even under difficult environmental conditions, such as in wastewater treatment plants, where corrosive gases and acids may occur.
Motor Protection
The PSE soft starter is equipped with built-in electronic overload protection that protects the motor from overheating. Since no additional overload protection component is required, our efficient design saves space, installation time, and ultimately money. The PSE soft starter can detect a stalled rotor thanks to the fixed brake protection, providing additional protection for your equipment. Finally, the integrated underload protection detects broken belts and dry-running pumps, which cause underload in the motors, thus preventing damage and saving energy.
Kick-Start
Sometimes a high starting torque is required to overcome the initial friction of, for example, blocked conveyor belts or pumps. An activated kick start provides the necessary torque to overcome the resistance, while the ramp-up still ensures a smooth start.
Analog Output
An analog ammeter can be connected to the analog output, displaying the power consumption during operation, thus making an additional current transformer unnecessary. The analog output signal can also be used as an analog input for a PLC.
Fieldbus Communication
With an optional connection, the PSE soft starter can be connected to a PLC using the ABB FieldBusPlug, which supports all common protocols. Using the fieldbus system, the soft starter can be set, monitored, and controlled by the PLC.
