Function Description

The standstill detection only requires the brake current to be set for the switch-on brake. The brake's current controller compensates for any thermal changes in the motor resistance, ensuring that the braking time remains consistent. Production fluctuations in the motor winding are also balanced out.

The standstill detection dynamically adapts to different motor sizes in star or delta configuration. No further adjustment is needed. Once the standstill is detected, a brake current flows through the motor for an optimized after-braking period of only 0.5 seconds.

The device monitors the requirements of the trade association according to GS-HO-01 concerning braking times and fault detection. If the permissible braking time of 10 seconds is exceeded three times due to incorrect adjustment of the brake current, overload, or aging, the brake will idle the system.

If the required braking duration exceeds 14 seconds, the brake shuts down immediately. In this case, the motor may continue to run. A new start is prohibited. Both blocks can be released by a power interruption.

Furthermore, the brake monitors the internal power semiconductors and the external circuitry. The current controller prevents current from ramping up during overload. The sensor technology detects any interruption in the braking circuit and prevents further attempts to start.

When the control system is connected to the power supply, the brake conducts a brief self-test by activating the brake current for approximately 200 milliseconds. After about 0.5 seconds, the control system is ready for a motor start.

Commissioning

The required brake current depends on the motor used and the moment of inertia. Therefore, it may be necessary to change the factory preset. The brake current should be adjusted via the potentiometer so that the motor comes to a standstill within 10 seconds. Braking times under 3 seconds can cause unnecessary heating of the brake and motor and should be avoided. The brake current should be monitored during this adjustment with a clamp meter or DC current clamp (with True RMS) and must be below 20A.

Ensure that the maximum braking times are adhered to with all tools and saw blades. Once the initial setting is completed, the control system is ready for operation.

In standby and during motor operation, the green LED lights up. During the braking process, the green LED blinks. If the red LED lights up, the braking time has been exceeded or another fault has occurred. The brake now prevents a further attempt to start the motor. The blockade is released when you briefly disconnect the device from the power supply.

Our version ASB20/S additionally features a relay, which can provide an external fault signal via a potential-free contact.

Installation Note

The motor connection cable should be as short as possible. Cable lengths over 10 meters can become critical for standstill detection. To prevent interference, the motor cable must not be routed alongside other high-frequency control cables.

Note

With machines that have belt drive, gear reduction, and unfavorable settings, resonances may occur during braking depending on the motor, which can interfere with standstill detection. In many cases, this can be remedied by adjusting the brake current. If you need assistance with this, please contact us.
