Automatic star-delta starters are used for asynchronous motors from 4 kW to prevent unacceptably high starting currents during startup. The advantage over manually operated star-delta starters is that these starters feature control logic or can be manually actuated, allowing the ramp-up time to be optimally adjusted to the specific application.
The starting process is implemented with a contactor control, a special time relay (KLIBO Star-Delta Timer), and an integrated overload relay. By adhering to important switching sequences and locking of the control, high operational safety is achieved.
The switching time should be set so that when switching from star to delta, at least 80% of the rated speed is reached. A motor suitable for star-delta starting must have a voltage output of 380V / 660V at a line voltage of 380V or delta 380V. For connection, motors with 6 lead-out winding ends are required.
